" Is not this the fast that I
loose the bands of wickedness, to undo the thongs of yoke,
postpone the oppressed free and break every yoke?
is not to divide your bread with the hungry,
introducing into the house the poor, the homeless,
in clothe the naked,
without looking away from your own people? "
(Is 58, 6-7)
FROM "Expositions on the Psalms" BISHOP OF ST AUGUSTINE (en. Ps. 42, 7-8)
The wings of your prayers
In a psalm is said, I said: Lord, have mercy on me, heal my soul, for I have sinned against you (Ps 4, 5). This appeal, brothers, is safe, but be alert for good deeds. Tap the Psalter obeying the commandments, touch the lyre, enduring passions. Break your bread to the hungry (Is 58, 7), said Isaiah, do not believe that it is enough to fast. Fasting humiliates you, it helps others. Will be fruitful if your hardship donate generously to others. Here, you have cheated your soul to those who give you what you took? where thou shalt put what you have denied yourself? How many poor could satisfy lunch today we have stopped! Your fasting should be this: while another takes food, feel nourished by the prayer for which you will be granted. In fact, Isaiah continues: While you talk yet, I'll tell you here I'm here, if you break the spirit of good bread to the hungry (Isaiah 58, 9-10), because usually it is done reluctantly and grudgingly, to avoid the hassle of he who seeks not to refresh the bowels of those in need. But God loves a cheerful giver (2 Cor 9: 7). If you gave the bread in sorrow, you have lost the bread and the substance. It 'so this willingly, so that one sees in while you're still talking about you say,' Here I am here. With what speed are granted the prayers of those who do good! This is the righteousness of man in this life, fasting, almsgiving, and prayer. Do you want your prayer to God flights? Give her two wings: fasting and almsgiving. So we are so quiet we discover God's light and truth of God, when will free us from death to him who already came to suffer death for us. Amen.
